Jeff Coffin
& the Crescent Super Band

A three-time GRAMMY-winning saxophonist from Dave Matthews Band and Béla Fleck & the Flecktones walked into a rehearsal room in Utah County and made a record with a band of high-school musicians. It wasn’t a clinic. It was a release.

The record

The Inside of the Outside — Jeff Coffin with Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band was released December 4, 2015 on Jeff’s own Ear Up Records. Jeff plays alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone and flute across all ten tracks. The horn sections and rhythm section are Soundhouse Artists — teenagers from Pleasant Grove, Utah — and the guest list reads like a festival lineup: Randy Brecker, Branford Marsalis, Victor Wooten, and Trombone Shorty.

The core sessions were tracked June 16–19, 2015 at Digital Source Studios in American Fork, Utah, with Blair Leishman engineering. Two tracks were recorded on March 4, 2015 at Abdala Studios in Havana, Cuba, during the band’s trip to the island. Mastering was done in Nashville.

“The future of music is in good hands.”Dave Matthews

Why it matters for your musician

This is what Soundhouse means by performance training. The Artists on this record didn’t attend a masterclass about professionalism. They prepared charts to a professional standard, played take after take next to a working touring musician, and delivered a release that stands on its own. The confidence that comes from that is not something you can teach in a lesson room.

Jeff Coffin is one of more than 189 visiting artists who have worked directly with Soundhouse Artists since 2002 — members of Journey, The Killers, Toto, Dave Matthews Band, Earth, Wind & Fire, and more. See the full list →
