Audition
Information

General Information

• Auditions are held by appointment at Caleb Chapman's Soundhouse, 2415 W 700 S, Suite S, Pleasant Grove.
• Audition slots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
• Be prepared to demonstrate basic performance skills including movement, expression, presentation, communication, and dress.
• Become familiar with the Season Catalog before your audition so you can identify your top band preferences.

What To Bring

• Your own play-along track on a phone or tablet. A sound system will be provided.
• Your instrument. Drummers play the house kit.
• Vocalists: all audition selections should be memorized.
• Vocalists: if callbacks are necessary, Soundhouse will contact those vocalists individually.

Requirements

Excluding drums

• Two prepared pieces in contrasting styles of approximately 60–90 seconds each that demonstrate your musical ability and knowledge of style.
• At least one of the two pieces should be a solo feature with play-along.
• All major and minor scales.
• Sight-reading.
• All dorian and mixolydian scales. Premier bands only

Drums

Be prepared to demonstrate these grooves

• Basic Latin style
• Medium swing
• Funk
• Rock
• Sight-read chart with set-up figures
• Trade 4's with self over a medium-tempo or up-tempo swing groove
• Ballad with brushes Premier only
• Mambo Premier only
• Jazz waltz Premier only

Requirements

• Two prepared pieces in contrasting styles of approximately 60–90 seconds — R&B, alternative, jazz, Latin, and so on — that demonstrate vocal ability and knowledge of style.
• Demonstrate proper microphone technique.
• Demonstrate stage performance abilities including gestures, eye contact, facial expression, movement, and performance energy.
• Demonstrate the ability to learn basic choreography.
• Demonstrate the ability to harmonize with a lead line.
• Sight-reading. Premier bands only

A Note For Vocalists

• All audition selections should be memorized.
• Bring your own play-along track on a phone or tablet. A sound system will be provided.
• We encourage every vocalist to stay active in their public school choir program. It is one of the fastest ways to learn to read music and to harmonize.
• If callbacks are necessary, we will contact those vocalists individually.
